Road Trip Hike – Red Rock National Conservation Area (Las Vegas) (8 posts)

    We need to start getting input from our members regarding the best time during the month of May to schedule this Las Vegas road trip hike, and any other things that we might need to note down. Some people might want to setup carpools and investigate how much rooms ahead of time since all hikers are paying on their own accord for everything. I’m going to try and scout this before May, but we’ll have to see how things go. So far I have this:

    DATE: TBD (Saturday Morning – Early May 2010?)
    LOCATION: Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area (Las Vegas, NV)
    NOTE:
    - All hikers will be responsible for their individual travel, hotel , and food arrangements (Everyone’s on their own)
    - Note that there is $5 per vehicle Parking Pass required while in the Conservation Area
    - Hikers will meet on Saturday morning at a designated meeting point
    - Designated hike will be Moderate, 3-4 mile round trip.
    - After the hike, hikers will be dismissed to enjoy Las Vegas!
    - Full details for hike/trip to be determined and posted.

    I’m sure there’ll be plenty to post about regarding this. Let’s get those ideas going!

    Today, I just finished talking with Yuri, a hike lead and organizer from Las Vegas who is part a few meetup groups. He gave me great information and recommendations about the Red Rock area for our planned adventure out there. I hope to venture out there in late March to meet up with him and another group to get acquainted with the area. From what he mentioned, national park passes are accepted in lieu of the $5 parking pass (if you have one) and that the best place to meet up is a local Albertson’s supermarket prior to going to Red Rock park. Depending on his schedule, he may be a guest hike lead for our hike out there. I’ll be in contact with Yuri to get everything in line.

    And, I additionally spoke with Irma, LATH hiking member, who mentioned that the second Sunday in May (May 9) is Mother’s Day. Many people won’t be able to go that weekend for that reason. Instead, it looks like the best bet is to go the 3rd Saturday (May 15 2010) for our road trip hike. What does everyone think thus far?

    I will be going this weekend to scout the hike with a Las Vegas hiking group. I’ll report once I come back. But people should probably start talking about any carpool setups and getting their rooms.
