Griffith Park Dante’s Peak (Extended Version)

REAL HIKE NAME: Mt. Hollywood Trail to Dante’s Peak (Extended Version)

This hike will be the last official weekend hike of the 2011 LATH Hiking Season and it is also an extended version of the Dante’s Peak hike which will take us beyond to the north end of Griffith Park and back.

HIKE LEVEL:  Level 6

MEETING TIME: 8:00am – 8:20am

Griffith Observatory Parking Lot
(at the top of the hill, by George Harrison Tree or Mt. Hollywood Trailhead)

DURATION: 3 Hours (approx.)

DISTANCE: 6 Miles (approx. round trip)

TRAIL WALKTHROUGH:  This morning hike will take us from the trail head in the Griffith Observatory parking lot to Mt. Hollywood peak (aka Dante’s Peak).  On our way up the steep mountain climb, we’ll be taking the first two trails in medium mode.  The last of the 3 will be a little more intense.  We can get to the top in about 35 minutes and will allow us to have a break and a spectacular view of the Los Angeles basin from the top. We’ll come down the all 3 medium tracks.
EXTENDED VERSION: We’ll continue North down from Dante’s Peak and go through the backside of Griffith Park. This will require some additional distance.

WATER REQUIRED. WATER CHECK WILL BE PERFORMED. If you do not take enough water or are not appropriately equipped for this hike, you will be turned away from doing this hike with us even if you show up. Please note, that we have expectations for Level 6 evening hikers. Read all the details.

REQUIRED: At least 2 liters of water

RECOMMENDED: Comfortable shoes with some grip (normal tennis shoes will do), and some good snacks.
