HIKE WALKTHROUGH: Johnson’s Pasture is in the foothills of Claremont that’s a part of the larger Claremont Hills Wilderness Park. The approx. 4-mile loop with a  respectable 860-ft gain of elevation, and provides views of the San Gabriel mountains.

We will start at the trail head near Mountain Ave. We begin with a slight up hill on a dirt trail to a small shaded grove that leads to a junction for Gale Mountain. We’ll take a right hand turn at the junction and head towards Gale Mountain.

We will proceed  for about a mile, along a dirt trail to a steep stretch.  Headed towards the fire road on the hill to a large transmission tower which we will stop and enjoy the view. Continue on the (asphalt) fire road on a descent (no shade) for about ½ a mile, We will make a right and continue on a dirt trail that continues with a steep incline with nice elevation gain. Expect most of the trail to have un-shaded sections.  We will have multiple stops along the way to help with some of the challenging inclines. Continue on the trail till we come to the junction in the trail that will take us back to the trail head to complete the loop.

MY FRIEND SAID I CAN DO THIS HIKE, I SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO IT, RIGHT?
We take your safety quite seriously, and would not like for you to attend a hike you’re not ready for.  You know your body and hiking experience better than your friends. Whether you are a first-timer or an experienced hiker, please read our hike details page as the hike may not suit your experience level. We have a better experience if every hike has hikers of the intended level.
