TRAILS THAT WILL BE HIKED: Sunset, Sunrise, Catalina, Dudleya, Gnatcatcher, Shoreline Park, and/or Sagebrush Walk Trails on the Ocean Trails Preserve.

ACTIVITY WALK-THROUGH: Ocean Trails is part of ten reserves that make up the 1,400 acres in Palos Verdes Nature Preserve. It’s a great place for beginner hikers. We will walk along designated cliff side trails that lead down to the ocean and start climbing up some switch backs that can be challenging for some but short in distance.

We will go at a leisure, but steady pace. After reaching the top you get to turn back and enjoy the spectacular views of the Ocean below with the clashing of the waves, the fly bye of pelicans and or seagulls gliding over the blue sea. We will continue across a paved/dirt trail to our second downward trail. As we reach the bottom of this trail we’ll walk along the rocky shoreline during low tide, then head back up. This hike has some challenging sections of steep switch backs, but they are relatively short and we will go at a leisure pace so everyone will be able to enjoy the spectacular views of the Ocean.

As we continue forward onto our last loop, we will encounter cactus along both sides of the trail and loop around to an area where we will be stopping for a break. It has 2 benches and a table to rest with the best views yet to come! We will head back here and proceed up our last big trail, which is a wide enough stair climb, but a bit steeper climb than the other 2. It also has cactus along both sides with limited wooden poles/wire rope like rails as we climb closer to the top, so we advise to be cautious here. This is a brief but steep “stairs” section that we will take slowly more than halfway into the hike. Lastly, we will be hiking back and come across a bridge with a beautiful view. We will continue right back where we started to complete are hike. If we’re lucky, we might get to see sea lions or dolphins swimming by in the ocean below.

After the hike we’ll drive about 15 minutes to Point Fermin Park for the free play. There are markets and food places along the way where you can grab food and/or drinks if needed. We’ll gather our chairs and blankets near the stage, enjoy the sunset, then take in the show.

SHAKESPEARE (After the hike): We will be attending the free performance of William Shakespeare’s comedy Richard III, presented by Shakespeare By The Sea at Point Fermin Park in San Pedro. This accomplished theater company puts on free performances throughout the southland every summer. Their mission is to create theatrical experiences for audiences in culturally diverse communities to make theatre accessible to all. There is some permanent bench seating, but most bring lawn chairs and/or blankets to sit on. Bring a sweatshirt or blanket to keep warm, as we are near the coast and the air can get damp and chilly. Food and drink are available for purchase, or you can bring your own.

You can learn about Shakespeare By The Sea and watch videos of past performances at http://www.shakespearebythesea.org/wp/

WATER REQUIRED. WATER CHECK WILL BE PERFORMED. If you do not take enough water or are not appropriately equipped for this hike, you will be turned away from doing this hike with us even if you show up. Please note, that we have expectations for Level 3 evening hikers.

HIKE REQUIREMENTS:
– WATER (at least 1.5 to 2 liters or three 20oz water bottles), 2 liters recommended
– Comfortable hiking/sports shoes with good grip
– Vaccination proof (or face mask for the entire hike)
Acceptable forms of vaccination proof:
– Physical Vaccine Record Card
– Digital card, which you can get here: https://myvaccinerecord.cdph.ca.gov

RECOMMENDED:
– Sunscreen
– Hat
– A good snack and comfortable walking shoes
– Try to pack lightly as you’ll be using plenty of your energy getting through the 3 section of switch back trails to the top and back. Bring hiking poles if needed.  If you’re going to the play it should cool down, so consider a hoodie, blanket or other, and bring collapsible chair(s) or a blanket to sit on.

IS IT DOG-FRIENDLY? Yes, experienced/friendly. But not allowed on the beach near water. Dogs must be on a leash! You must pick up after your dog. Bring separate water and snacks for your dog as well. (They do provide doggy bags there, but don’t count on it in case they run out. So please bring your own baggies to pick up after your dog.)

RESTROOMS: There will be some at the meeting location, at the trail head, and at the performance.

MY FRIEND SAID I CAN DO THIS HIKE, I SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO IT, RIGHT?
We take your safety quite seriously, and would not like for you to attend a hike you’re not ready for.  You know your body and hiking experience better than your friends. Whether you are a first-timer or an experienced hiker, please read our hike details page as the hike may not suite your experience level. We have a better experience if every hike has hikers of the intended level.
