TRAILS THAT WILL BE HIKED: Temescal Canyon, Temescal Ridge, Backbone & Rivas Canyon Trails
HIKE WALKTHROUGH: This hike is a trek through the southeast segment of Topanga State Park. It begins with an aggressive 2.5 mile stretch with 1600’ elevation gain, also known as the hike to Skull Rock. This is the toughest elevation gain segment of the hike. We’ll keep going until we reach Temescal peak ~2 miles later with another 300’ elevation gain. Temescal Peak is the highest point in the eastern part of Santa Monica Mountains. If we’re feeling unusually spry and don’t mind adding another mile to the hike, Cathedral Rocks and The Hub are nearby.
It’s here that we’ll pick up the Backbone Trail and meander across the crest for 1.5 miles before beginning our 5 mile descent through shrubs and grasslands to Will Rogers State Park. From there it’s 2 miles through Rivas Canyon & a final rugged switchback climb before returning to our starting point.
Do not underestimate this hike! It will test your stamina, but weather permitting, will reward you with wonderful views of Santa Monica Bay. If you’re into geocaching there’s at least on I know of along the trail.
REQUIRED: Water Bottles (at least 2 – 3 liters water bottles), hat, sunscreen, hiking equipment, hiking footwear.
RECOMMENDED: Light-colored clothing/hiking attire, hiking pole(s), additional sun gear for hot days.
RESTROOMS: Restrooms are available at the meeting location. Please use prior to arriving.
DOG-FRIENDLY?: No. Dogs are not allowed on this hike.

MY FRIEND SAID I CAN DO THIS HIKE, I SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO IT, RIGHT?
We take your safety quite seriously, and would not like for you to attend a hike you’re not ready for. You know your body and hiking experience better than your friends. Whether you are a first-timer or an experienced hiker, please read our hike details page as the hike may not suit your experience level. We have a better experience if every hike has hikers of the intended level.
