November & December 2013 LATH Hikes
The holidays are here and our hike leads have scheduled a great set of hikes for the months of November and December. This time around, we are having a LATH Open House event where you can come meet the hiking group, get some hiking advice, and enjoy some good social time with us off the trails. In addition, to make this holiday season a little more special for some, we’re going to designate four of the following hikes as toy drop-off points for our first LATH Toy Drive. We’ll be providing full information regarding the toy drive in a separate posting for you to bring a new/unwrapped toy, to our hike leads to collect. We’ll then give them to a designated facility/organization to give to those who could use them a little more this time of year. As you know may already know, when the holidays are right around the corner, it’s usually the indication that our hiking season is coming to a close . But fear not, for there is plenty of hiking before our hike leads take a Winter Break (Dec 16 to Jan 8) to enjoy some well deserved time off. We’ve also included some information about our upcoming 2014 LATH Hiking season which will include a Road Trip to Grand Canyon National Park. So take the time to look at all the hikes and start adding them to your schedules. We look forward to having you join us on a hike and, as always, Rediscovering Los Angeles!
BEFORE YOU CLICK ON A HIKE BELOW, PLEASE NOTE: When clicking on the links below, keep in mind that the associated hike information page may not be up to date with regards to its meeting info/date/time it was linked from. However, it will display (or be created with) the correct information (date, times, and assigned hike lead) as the hike approaches its scheduled date. It does take some work to update these, so we work on the ones with closer upcoming dates first.

LATH Yosemite Volunteering 2013
UPDATE: Sign ups are now closed.
The LA Trail Hikers, Hike Leads and a limited number of members, have been invited this Veteran’s Day weekend (Friday, November 8 thru Sunday November 10) to help NatureBridge, a non-profit organization, connect young people from under served communities to the wonder and science of nature by volunteering time at Yosemite National Park entrances.
To keep the volume of volunteers to a manageable number, invites had been limited to the LATH Hike Leads. However, some leads will not be attending, so we’re opening opening those spots to the general group at a first-come, first-served basis. We do not want to over go our number of invites so the attending group is adequately accounted for. Oh and, no pets allowed.
REQUIRED:
– You will need to be available on Friday, November 8 (meaning having the day off) and Saturday, November 9. You’ll need to have travel arrangements to get to Yosemite National Park to partake in the Training Session inside the park on Friday at 4:30pm. (Specific details for meeting points will be provided to those selected.)
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:
You will be walking, collecting donations from park visitors (while they are in their cars) prior to entering the park on behalf of the non-profit group for about 6-8 hours starting at about 9am on Saturday. Expect to be on your feet most of the time, with breaks, of course. The training will be quite insightful and will go into details about what to expect. It’s quite fun though.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
Our team will be fully hosted from Friday afternoon through Sunday Morning. Here is the intended schedule for the Volunteering Shift:
– Friday afternoon training, dinner, and accommodations.
– Saturday shift; celebratory dinner. If you find that this is the end of your time, you can head home after the volunteering is done.
– Sunday breakfast Sunday morning. End of accommodations. Enjoy the park the rest of the day or simply drive home.
Accommodations are rustic. Dormitories are divided to help separate groups by gender. The layout does not provide separate dorms, bunk beds. We’ll be staying where the students usually stay while attending while part of the program. Facilities will be shared.
OPTIONAL: BRING 1 GUEST
Those hikers which get a spot should note the you will be able to invite 1 guest to join you. If you have no intentions of bringing a guest, we’ll simply use that position and bring in another hiker who will also be on their own, but will be volunteering.
OPTIONAL: SUNDAY HIKE
On Sunday, after breakfast, you’ll be able to enjoy time at the park. Majority of the group will be taking a group to do some hiking starting in the Valley area. You can be part of this or simply start the drive home.
If selected, we will be contacting via email/phone to make sure you get the next set of information and forms you’ll need to attend. Time to sign up starts now and ends Fri Oct 25 or when all available spots are full. Then we’ll take down this form.
UPDATE: Sign ups are now closed.
September & October 2013 LATH Hikes

For the first time in a few years, we’re giving the Hollywood Sign hike a break from the rotation. But don’t worry, it’ll be back in the next set of hikes. We’ll start September with a long weekend, so we’re taking Sunday (and Monday) off. Additionally, we’ll be holding our annual Halloween Costume Contest Hike on the last Weds in October. We look forward to all the costumes! Don’t forget to RSVP for these hikes when they are posted to our Facebook events section. It does help us communicate with attending hikers should there be any last minute changes, cancellations, recommendations, requirements, and words from our hike leads. Welcome LATH’s Newest Hike Leads
Join us in welcoming five new hike leads the LA Trail Hikers – Gianni Manzano, Syliva Quinteros, Jorge Jimenez, Carol Martinez, and Jose Luis Gonzalez!
These outstanding individuals have demonstrated their passion and leadership in wanting to promote the spirit of hiking and health among our hikers. Their entrance to the group brings the hike lead count to an astounding 13! The group has definitely grown since 2009. They are here to help us motivate more hikers to continue enjoying nature the way we have been the past few years. We are excited to have them join our team and look forward to have them leading you on more adventures through nature in, and around, the greater Los Angeles area. They will start leading hikes this May and on. If you participating in one of their upcoming hikes, feel free to give them a warm welcome. We now invite you to learn a little more about your new LA Trail Hikers leads.
Gianni Manzano
Gianni started like many of us from ground zero. Although, still new to the activity, he shows leadership skills to motivate others to get out and move. He stands with a focus on improving our hikers’ health. He notes:
“My experience with LATH has proven to be one of the best decision I have made in regards to my own health and well being. It has awaken in me a passion to seek out new places to explore as well as promote my own physical well being and those of my loved ones.”
Sylvia Quinteros
Sylvia comes to the group with in-depth experience as a hiker. She felt that the group provided her a sense of belonging and wants to share that same experience with hikers. She told us that:
“I have always enjoyed nature and just being outdoors. I am a tree hugger and enjoy being amongst them. I have been hiking since I was girl scout and have been in and out of hiking ever since. Hiking is my favorite form of exercise.”
Jorge Jimenez
Jorge comes from a strong hiking background and enjoys higher level hikes. As with the other hike leads, Jorge looks forward to sharing his experience to motivate hikers to continue a passion for the outdoors. He tells us:

A Fond Farewell For Some Great Leads
Since the inception of the LA Trail Hikers, a hike lead has always been at the forefront of each of our hikes. These leaders are the backbone of the group. They put in their time, commitment and heart into getting people out on nature park trails of Los Angeles County and surrounding areas. They look after hikers and guide them through trails as best they can. Their passion for hiking and leading makes each adventure safe and enjoyable. They come aboard knowing that they are participating on volunteer basis, and should something more important come along their own life’s path, it is understandable that they will make the right decision for their own lives.
This past season, the LA Trail Hikers saw the departure of 3 of its long-time, memorable hike leads : Lorena Rodriguez, Luis Salazar, Pattie Soltero.
Their hike lead retirement, in a sense, came during a time of change in their lives. For each one, a life path opened up which must have been one difficult decision of having to step down from their leadership role with the group to continue leading their themselves in the best direction. Whether it was for health, family or career changes, these three individuals followed their hike lead instinct to make the right choice in refocusing their time in much needed areas in their lives. It was important for us to support them in their decision which positively impacted them and their families. However, we wanted to honor them for what they have done for the LA Trail Hikers by remembering each one.
Lorena Rodriguez
LATH Hike Lead: 2009 – 2012
Lorena was the first female hike lead for the LA Trail Hikers. She started with the group since its formation, and is credited with assisting in conceiving the group’s name. When she joined the group, she quickly found a love for the outdoors, which matched her lifestyle and personality, through hiking. Her warm personality and sensational smile always made new hikers feel welcomed to the group. She always played an encouraging role for others who wanted to get into hiking. As an active, high-stamina, hike lead, she took the group through many adventures online pokies on higher level hikes and participated in a high number of events hosted by the group.
Luis Salazar
LATH Hike Lead: 2010 – 2012
Luis entered the group a year after it officially opened the doors to the public. Under his leadership, our hikers were always under the best of care. With his strong stature, he was quite the helpful hike lead on hikes that required the help of another. His personality shined throughout the group as he provided helpful tips for attending hikers. He would take on longer hikes for the group and was the primary hike lead to head trips to the Bridge to Nowhere where a strong hike lead was needed. It was without a doubt that he was well versed with nature and had no problem sharing his experience with others in hopes that they would benefit from his advice.
Pattie Soltero
LATH Hike Lead: 2011 – 2012
Pattie surely stands out among hike leads. Her natural leadership and personality has set a cornerstone for filling the hike lead role. Since 2011, she was quite an extraordinary hike lead and has really contributed greatly to the LA Trail Hikers in leading, guiding, and inspiring. Above all, Pattie has led they way for many beginners and first time hikers into sport that she admits falling in love with herself. She has surely touched the lives of many while leading them through many trails.
At the time when they stepped down, they mentioned that they would try to make it out to LATH hikes/events when ever they could. So, we haven’t seen the last of them just yet. However, we give them our kindest regards for all that they have done as hike leads and as fellow hikers. On behalf of the LA Trail Hikers, thank you, each one of you for being the best hike leads you could be and making our little group something we continue to enjoy hike after hike.
