It’s almost time for the holiday season and our LATH Hike Leads have prepared a great list of hikes for November and December to close out the 2014 LATH hiking season. We’ve had some great adventures in 2014, including our recent Grand Canyon Road Trip Hike! Just so you know, that trip was one that the hike leads had planning on setting up for a few years, and it finally came to fruition! Throughout 2014, we’ve met many new hikers that have become part of, what our hikers have warmly called, our LATH family. We’re happy to have with us while we go on some great hikes in and around Los Angeles. In addition, at the end of our hiking season, we have schedule a LATH Winter Break (details listed below the December hikes) to allow our hike leads to take a well deserved break. But hey, the season’s not done yet, so let’s get to that hikes list schedule and go on a LATH hike!
BEFORE YOU CLICK ON A HIKE LINK BELOW, PLEASE NOTE: The hike information on each page may not be up to date with regards to its meeting info/date/time it was linked from. However, it will display (or be created with) the correct information (date, times, and assigned hike lead) as the hike approaches its scheduled date. It does take some work to update these, so we work on the ones with closer upcoming dates first. If a hike has multiple upcoming dates (typically Wednesday night hikes), only the most upcoming date (and info) will be displayed, and will be updated accordingly.

Back in early 2008, a couple of friends engaged in a conversation that resulted in the talks about a waterfall hike out by Arcadia (Sturtevant Falls). One of those friends, Jason Bazalar, found an interest in going to see this waterfall he had never been to. And, to his delight, the other friend more than obliged to take him there for a hike. This small talk would eventually spark an invitation to friends for a series of ongoing hikes within the greater Los Angeles area. The email list requests came in and grew as more and more people found out about the group. It grew to a point where a simple website was created to keep everyone in the loop rather than having to add and email everyone. The recreation of the group became quite consistent and it became a great way to pursue a healthier lifestyle. This small group eventually climb to a whooping 7 trails that were rotated on Sundays throughout the rest of the year. After noticing what other hiking groups in the area had been doing (and participating in some of them too), it became clear that this group felt comfortable enough to try and expand the idea of taking locals into their own L.A. backyards for hikes, while giving them a good reason to be physically active. The team needed to have a name, and the brainstorming began. Some ideas floated, and finally one was derived from all the ideas present. And, on August 17, 2009, the small group of hiking enthusiasts would become the group we all know today as the LA Trail Hikers. At the next hike that followed, Jason, who had been coordinating the hiking events from the beginning, and now founder of the group, announced to the group, “As of today, we are the LA Trail Hikers.” Since then, the group has seen many seasons of hikers, hike leads, and followers admire and participate with the group. At no point was it believed that it would be the strong and inspiring group that it is today. And, as many of you know, this group’s name has become synonymous with hiking in Los Angeles. On August 17, 2014, we’ll celebrating our 5th year anniversary as the LA Trail Hikers (aka LATH). We would like to make sure you’re part of it all by joining us on some great hikes. The LATH Hike Leads have been able to arrange a great set of hikes for the months of July and August, including our annual LATH Beach Party in Bolsa Chica State park to help us kick off our 5 year anniversary celebration. We hope you’re able to make it to many of our hiking events. We thank you for your continued support and appreciate all the love you’ve shown for this little hiking group that could. Without further ado, we present our July & August 2014 LATH Hikes List.

The LA Trail Hikers are looking for some great outdoor and tech savvy volunteers to be part of their LATH Digital Team. We are looking to expand LATH by providing a stronger digital presence and become a great resource for lovers of nature, whether they hike with our trail team or not. If you would like to be part of a growing organization that is already making an impact out in nature make to let us know how you can help others from a digital front. #LATH

The LA Trail Hikers have been featured on Outdoor SoCal! It’s always great to know that we’re a great resource to the people of Los Angeles and surrounding areas. We’ve come a long way since the group officially got off the ground in 2009. Check out their feature on #LATH at the link below:
It’s not easy getting started in an activity that we’ve never tried, or know much about, including hiking. The LA Trail Hikers group is composed of hikers with different experience levels. Those with years of hiking experience, and those with none. A while back the LATH Hike Leads talked about having a Beginner Hiker initiative which would make sure that we would provide entry level hikes for those just getting started with the group and/or activity. Of those who have committed to this agenda since then, Patricia De Leon was one of the hike leads who believed in and encouraged hikers to get started by leading quite a few of these beginner hikes. She was one of the first hike leads our new hikers would experience their first hikes through. Earlier this year, Patricia honorably stepped down as a LATH hike lead to pursue trails and adventures that would allow her to grow as a hiker in her own way. The group has quite understanding, and wished her the best in her future plans along a new path.
Today, the LA Trail Hikers would like to recognize her commitment and leadership, with the group, by giving her special thanks on behalf of all the LATH Hike Leads and every hiker who has hiked under her guidance. Although she is no longer leading for the group, she has noted that she would remain active when possible as a fellow hiker. For all her time and great judgement, and all the hikers who you have inspired, we thank you Patricia!
Patricia De Leon LATH Hike Lead: 2010-2013
LATH FB Profile: “In pursuit of providing a better hiking experience, she will be providing beginners a better sense of preparedness and information. Her experience moving from beginner to hike lead has given her just the right attitude to help those starting off with the group.”
If you have ever hiked with Patricia, you may want to send her a personal thank you by leaving her a comment below:
Autumn is right around the corner, September 22 to be exact, and we are looking to have some great hikes to start the fall season. So you know we’re excited to bring you the LATH Hikes List for September and October. As you will notice, there is a variety of levels during both months. Including 5 new trails in October. For the first time in a few years, we’re giving the Hollywood Sign hike a break from the rotation. But don’t worry, it’ll be back in the next set of hikes. We’ll start September with a long weekend, so we’re taking Sunday (and Monday) off. Additionally, we’ll be holding our annual Halloween Costume Contest Hike on the last Weds in October. We look forward to all the costumes! Don’t forget to RSVP for these hikes when they are posted to our Facebook events section. It does help us communicate with attending hikers should there be any last minute changes, cancellations, recommendations, requirements, and words from our hike leads. We look forward to having you join us on a hike and enjoying nature with us.
